The convenience of transferring money with PayPal is nothing new. You simply enter the desired amount and the recipient's email address. Always be on your guard if you receive a message claiming that someone has mistakenly transferred money to your PayPal account—after all, they made a mistake entering the email address. Such cases have occurred frequently. Unfortunately, there's more to it than that.

Scammers often target mobile phone owners. Where they obtained their phone number is unknown. The calls appear to be automated, based on a pre-established phone number list. Victims of this criminal scam receive unsolicited calls, usually from abroad. Spain and Italy are common countries of origin for such calls (within Europe). Those called hear a pre-recorded text, often from a computer-generated voice. This voice reports that they have been the victim of a possible fraud, that payments have already been made from their (PayPal) account, or, in other words, that there have been "suspicious" debits or incidents on their account. This is a lie.

With increasing frequency, private individuals and organizations in Germany have experienced unexpected phone calls. The caller is a supposed support employee from Microsoft or another reputable company. This supposed employee claims to have detected a serious and dangerous virus infection or Trojan on your computer. Initially, this fake employee offers to neutralize the malware on your home or work computer. The recipient is asked to sit down at their computer and follow their instructions. In reality, the supposed employee installs malicious software on the PC and circumvents security settings in order to gain access to valuable data. This scam is known as a tech support scam.
